How was the idea of 69 born? – Wae ask József Czapp, the creator behind the concept
As my 50th birthday approached, I found myself reflecting on the challenges and beautiful moments that have shaped the past decades of my life. This introspective period revealed how crucial it is to maintain balance in every aspect of life. I began pondering how I could encapsulate the diverse, often contrasting events of my journey—both the highs and the lows—into a single expression. Born in 1969, the concept of a 69%-spirit naturally came to mind, symbolizing a perfect balance where strength and softness harmonize elegantly in a single bottle. It’s like Yin and Yang—the unity of opposites: strength in weakness, gentleness in power. A merging, a dissolving, a perfect harmony.
Why was plum chosen as the base ingredient? What makes this fruit special to you?
Plum holds a significant place in Hungarian culture, particularly in the tradition of pálinka distillation. It’s also a personal favorite, as I come from the Szatmár-Bereg region, home to the "Nemtudom" ("I Don’t Know") plum, which has a rich history tied to the Tisza River and its floods. Independent. Wild. A survivor—and yet incredibly sweet. Its deep, complex flavor remains prominent even in high-alcohol spirits, making it the perfect choice for a 69%-strength pálinka.
What makes this spirit with 69% alcohol different from average-strength varieties?
This spirit balances strength and intensity with the sweet softness of plum. It embodies the essence of Yin and Yang. The high alcohol content symbolizes power, while the plum’s sweetness represents delicacy. The challenge was to create harmony between these opposites, ensuring the spirit isn’t overly aggressive but instead refined and balanced. This is what makes the 69 so unique: it’s both powerful and gentle, offering an unforgettable taste experience.
For what occasions would you recommend this pálinka?
I recommend 69 for moments when people seek balance and harmony—when something special happens in their lives or because of their actions. We often forget that true celebration lies in being loved. This pálinka is perfect for those everyday milestones that deserve acknowledgment. Whether you’re gathering with loved ones or sharing an intimate moment with someone you adore, the drink’s strength and softness provide both pleasure and comfort.
How should one enjoy such a strong drink?
Slowly, in small sips—just a taste! As the product’s slogan suggests, it invites us to savor the moment, much like we wish time would slow down during celebrations or beautiful experiences. By drinking it slowly, we can enjoy every drop and make the experience last.
How does the higher alcohol content impact the flavor profile?
The higher alcohol content enhances the flavors, making them more dynamic, but the balance remains intact. The plum’s soft sweetness offsets the intensity, ensuring the drink isn’t harsh. The strength of the alcohol amplifies the fruitiness, creating a lively interplay of flavors. This harmony is what truly sets it apart, making it a standout spirit.
Was there any special process involved in production?
Yes, preserving the natural character of the plum was a priority during the distillation process. We carefully regulated the production to highlight the rich aroma and flavor of the fruit. Only the highest quality plums were used, as they are critical to achieving the desired final quality. Additionally, a touch of barrel aging helped to bring the flavors together, creating a smooth, well-rounded spirit. The result is encapsulated in a uniquely designed bottle, making it recognizable worldwide.
After five years of perfecting this creation, it’s time for the 69 to mean to everyone what it does to me: an unforgettable experience that you’ll always yearn to revisit.
